Pump the brakes and watch this
Right here in Pittsburgh, the next era of automotive innovation is just beginning.
And it all starts with today’s Thought Liters, featuring the genius that is making it all happen. Story below — here’s the full episode, which is premiering now:
Our guest, AJ Lewis, invented sphere brake technology following his military service in Iraq. Over time, that became Sphere Brake Defense — which actually now services the military.
Here’s an expanded timeline of innovation — to show why this is truly once-in-a-lifetime:
1902: The disc brake is patented. When you press your brake pedal, a small clamp applies pressure to the wheel, slowing your vehicle down. Over time, the brake wears, you take it to an auto shop, and pay through the nose to replace the pads.
For over a hundred years: Nothing happens. No innovation. Same old brakes.
Today: AJ patents sphere brakes. When you press your brake pedal, pressure is applied around the entirety of your wheel, which means much greater stopping power. Over time, the brake wears (much more slowly)…and the pads are replaced by hand, with no tools or wheel removal.
It’s such a mind-blowing invention, says AJ, that career auto industry veterans admit they never even thought to change the shape of a brake. And this has been the study of their lives…
Today, AJ and I wheel through a flight of local craft, pumping our brakes every so often to learn another piece of AJ’s story. I think you’ll really enjoy it.
